Top 10 Hidden GameCube Gems

2. Kirby Air Ride

Now, I recommended Wave Race: Blue Storm earlier in this list, namely for its unique and complicated racing style. Kirby Air Ride, on the other hand, is almost the polar opposite of Blue Storm; in fact, the entire game is played by using only a single button and the analogue stick. However, it's this, among other things, that make Kirby Air Ride really stand out.

As I mentioned, Kirby Air Ride is a bit different from the racing norm by only using one button to keep the action going. Kirby's star (essentially the vehicle for this game) moves forward on its own, the speed dependent on which star you choose. By holding down the A button, you can 'charge' the star, which is useful for making tight turns and getting a nice speed boost on top of it, but also requires the star to stop for a second. In addition, pressing the A button is how you suck up enemies and use their powers, making it a bit of a risk and reward system, as using powers can essentially slow you down and let the other racers get ahead.

This very simple, but well implemented system is present throughout the game's three very different modes. From the titular (and more typical) Air Ride mode, to the shrunken Top Spin, to the RPG-lite City Trial, the game it easy to immediately pick up and play, making it perfect for families and parties… and even just a quick run to try and unlock more of the many achievements and collectibles available to hoard away.
