Top 10 Hidden GameCube Gems

4. Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean

One genre that the GameCube was overall lacking in were RPGs. While there were a few notable entries that made it to Nintendo's console during the generation, most of these were ports from the ill-fated Dreamcast, such as the excellent Skies of Arcadia: Legends. The PlayStation 2, on the other hand, enjoyed a deluge of RPGs, leaving that as the premier console to go to for fans of the genre.

Still, one great RPG that Sony fans would miss out on was Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean. A mouthful of a name aside, Baten Kaitos melded a unique plotline and world with a different, card based battle system which really didn't resemble a card game at all. Before battle, players will create decks with Magnus (cards), which will determine how party members can attack, quite like the Mega Man Battle Network games (without the real-time action). Party members can also use a camera to take pictures of monsters during battle, which will eventually develop into new Magnus cards.

Given the intriguing plot and world that Baten Kaitos creates, it's well worth tracking down and playing, despite its slightly inflated price. There's little like it on any of the consoles during the GameCube's generation… other than the game's prequel, Baten Kaitos Origins, of course, which offers a new story and a tougher difficulty than the original title.
