The Top 10 Greatest Video Game Stories (Ever)

09. Mass Effect

Originally created as a platform exclusive for Microsoft's Xbox 360, the first game in the three-game story-arc tells the story of Commander Shepard (whether that is a male or female, and how that character appears being entirely up to the player) who, taking command of a very special interstellar space ship, is destined to discover the existence of a hostile alien force bent upon the destruction of all sentient life in the universe.

The game was so popular that, despite its creation as an Xbox 360 platform-exclusive, not releasing it on other platforms made no sense at all, particularly thanks to its incredibly deep story line and its memorable cast of characters. That being the case, the decision was made to extend its reach, first to Windows PC, and then to PlayStation 3.

As Commander Shepard, the primary plot involves your quest to stop a rogue Spectre Agent named Saren from drawing the Geth (an army of sentient machines bent upon dominating and controlling the sentient races of the Galaxy).

While working to defeat Saren and the Geth, Shepard discovers that a far more dangerous -- no, a certainly lethal -- threat exists in the form of an alien presence known as The Reapers -- whose goal is nothing less than the complete annihilation of ALL sentient life in ALL of the galaxy. The threat is actually part of a reoccurring event whose back-story you need to play the game to fully appreciate.

The Reapers make their presence known, and it soon becomes obvious that they have been using Saren, who they have somehow enslaved to their will, to get into Citadel Space in order to help them to begin the next of the cycles of purging of life that is repeated by the Reapers every 50,000 years.

While all three of the games in the series are great, and all three have great stories to tell, it was the first game in the series that both established the narrative and, of far more importance, delivers the biggest and most intense experience, hence our choosing it.
