When you begin the game your civilisation is just a scattering of farms, shacks, logging cabins, and market squares. Once you start producing wood, bricks and iron your little town will grow into an urban spawl of factories. Below are four stages that that will assure a quick development

Stage 1

To begin with focus on building at least 20 farmer residences, connecting them with a road and have a marketplace situated somewhere in the middle of them so a small town begins to develop. Any additional houses you build should be near the town center.

Stage 2

At this stage you need to find a forest just outside your town and build at least two timber yards that have a sawmill and a warhouse so you can start to produce planks for construction. When choosing the location for a timber yard you need to make sure that there is enough forest land around it so they are able to function correctly. Once your timber yards are in place and producing planks you need to turn your attention to your farmers who will require fish, schnapps and clothes. Build a fishery along the coast, followed by a potato farm just outside your town that has a distillery that is not too far from your farms fields so you can produce alcohol. Also near your fields you need to build a sheep farm that has framework knitters.

Stage 3

Once your products begin to reach the marketplace you will be able to select one of the farmer residences and upgrade them from peasants to workers which will unlock another social group and more buildings. Remember that when you assign workers to these new buildings they will no longer be able to continue their previous job so it is advised that you only promote farm houses when you need a specific group of workers. Not managing this correctly can lead to unemployment or a unstable economy.

Stage 4

Now that you have workers you will be able to build clay pits. A clay pit can only be built on clay sources, if you look at your map you will see at least two places you can build them. At the clay pits you will need to build a brick factory and a warehouse nearby for storage. When you have reached this point in the game you will discover that gameplay comes full circle. You will still unlock new products and social groups but the overall gameplay won't change much. However you do need to keep in mind that the more dwellers you gather the greater the consumption of resources you consume so you will need to construct buildings accordingly to cater for the different needs.
