The road to dominance in Age of Wonders: Planetfall is a long and arduous one that will require every strategic opportunity to be thoroughly explored so that you can find the best way possible to develop your empire. This will include researching for resources and making pacts with other settlements so that you minimise losses in the event of war.

From the very start of the game it is important to ensure that the people in your colony are happy otherwise they will start to rebel against you. To help reverse declining happiness you need to build a stucture such as the Recreational Dome, Botanical Gardens, or Virtual Entertainment Plaza as soon as possible. If the option to build any of these structures is not available you will need to research them.

Once you have completed one of these happiness buildings you should focus in putting together an army which will be able to defend your cities (especially the captial) from attack or scout the surrounding areas for resources. If you decide to attack an enemy it is important that you remember to leave some troops behind so you don't leave your cities open to invasion. In the early game having one army is sufficient to defend your lands from invaders but later on you will need plenty of units.

One of the first things you should do at the start of the game is to send out a scout (a single unit with high movement speed) to collect as many resources that are not defended as possible. Make sure at the start of the turn before you begin exploring you set your research and unit research. Taking over research nodes or finding caches can help boost your production and research.

Energy, Cosmite, Knowledge and Influence are the four main resources required for you to progress in Age of Wonders: Planetfall. Influence is particularly important as it allows you to buy high-level units without spending any energy or waiting turns. To do this you need to find an NPC faction that operate independently of other AI players (these include Autonom, Growth, Paragon, Psi-Fish, and Spacers) and be on friendly terms and complete their quests. The units you get via influence spawn at your capital immediately and can be used in battle or to defend your capital.

Specific conditions must be met in Campaign missions in order to win the game but if you are playing a random map the key to winning can be broken down to Total Conquest, Unification, and Destruction (Purification). You basically have to dominate your enemies, working with your allies and ensure you are on top at the end to win. To be successful will require that you plan your strategy accordingly and complete the respective research.
