To start new colonies you must research the Frontier Facilities society tech and build a Colonizer unit afterward. Once you have crafted the Colonizer you will be able to place a new colony. Check out our How to Expand Guide for Age of Wonders: Planetfall to find out everything you need to know.
When you expand in Age of Wonders: Planetfall you need to keep three things in mind when searching for an appropriate location - 1) Does it keep the colony producing? 2) Does it keep heroes moving? 3) Does it keep a close eye on enemy movements?
The best way to deduce this is to zoom out on the map so you are able to view the sector's available resources which will appear as one of four icons (see below). Each sector will usually have one or two icons and sometimes share a particular resource with a nearby sector.
• Yellow Icon
The yellow icon represents Energy, and it's used as a currency to produce units, structures, and more.
• Green Icon
The green icon represents Food, and it is what keeps people alive.
• Orange Icon
The orange icon represents Production, and it is used to build units, upgrade colonies, or specialize sectors.
• Purple Icon
The purple icon represents Knowledge and it is primarily used for research.
Once you know what type of resource can be obtained in any given sector you can begin exploiting that particular resource. To start exploiting you just need to annex the sector for a nearby colony. Your first colony (via the Colony Panel) will be able to annex adjacent sectors which will be completely dependent on your population (pops) for that colonial center.
• 1-5 Population
An extra sector
• 6-10 Population
Your third sector
• 11-15 Population
Your fourth sector
You’ll be notified when your colony is ready to annex a new sector and once the sector has been annexed a menu will appear on screen saying 'Upgrade Sector' and from here or from the 'Sector Production' menu for the relevant colony you will be able to select various upgrades to exploit the sector. Remember that your population grows depending on how much food your colony produces.
