While it is true that the game will already make Mario run automatically, gamers still have to employ some sort of strategy in place as success in the game involves the proper timing of Mario’s jumps. Successfully timing a jump will allow Mario a chance to either get a grow mushroom, a challenge coin (pink, red, purple or black), or even eliminate an enemy.

But jumping, by tapping the screen, is not the only thing Mario can do. He also have few tricks up his sleeve. Here are some of Mario’s basic moves.

1. Simple Jump – tap on the screen to make Mario do simple, but low, jumps. These jumps are ideal for either vaulting over small obstacles or getting rid of an enemy.

2. High Jump – To do this, simply do a tap and hold combo on the screen to make Mario make a higher than usual jump. This move is best used to reach a high platform or reach some coins fixed at a high place. It can also be used to jump over wide gaps.

Note: Once you’ve unlocked Luigi, you will be able to jump even higher since Luigi is basically taller than Mario. Other characters, when played, will offer the player unique moves to execute.

3. Midair Spin – Tap and hold to do a high jump and then make a quick tap to make Mario spin as he makes his landing. You may use this move to take out enemies or when you want Mario to land slowly.

4. Spin Strike – While Mario is jumping in the air and near an enemy, tap the screen to help Mario take out the enemy right beside him.

5. Flutter Jump – This is Peach’s best move. To execute, tap and hold the screen to allow Peach to make use of her ball gown to float over her landing. Using the Flutter Jump is best with stages that have wide gaps and tall enemies.

6. Midair Stall – Stall Mario’s descent by tapping the screen and then sliding your finger to the left. This is best to use when you decided that a high jump is not at all necessary while Mario is already in the air.

7. Wall Jump – Just before reaching a wall, tap the screen to make Mario jump off a wall and onto the other side of the wall. This is best used to make Mario climb over high walls or perhaps pick up a coin that’s sitting right between a gap.

You could allow Mario to slide down a wall too by simply letting go of Mario and then tapping on the screen again to get him to wall jump to the other side.

8. Consecutive Wall Jumps – This is known as one of the stylish moves Mario can do to impress Toads to come back to the kingdom. To do this, simply tap on the screen every time Mario is hanging by a wall to make him jump across both walls alternately.

9. Vaulting Jump – Tap the screen while vaulting over an enemy to take it out. Doing so will crush the enemy and impress the Toads too (If during Toad Rally).

10. Landing Roll – After a long and high jump, Mario decides to break his fall by rolling when he lands. You don’t have to do anything to make this happen. But knowing that this is done automatically, can help you build your strategy when timing your jumps as doing a Landing Roll allows Mario to eliminate enemies while he is performing this roll.

11. Rolling Jump – While Mario is rolling off, tap on the screen quickly to make Mario perform a Rolling Leap. This is also a move that the Toad loves.

12. Edge Climbing – When clutching an edge, Mario will automatically pull himself up a ledge if you do not tap the screen for a few seconds while he is on an edge. If you do tap, he’ll be jumping his way over that edge.

13. Slope Slide – Take out enemies by sliding down a slope. There is no action required for the player to do. Just let Mario slide down a slope and watch him take out those enemies. You may use the few seconds here to time your next move.

14. Consecutive Stomps – This is known as another Toad-pleaser. Stomp over multiple enemies in a row by timing your jumps over them. Make sure the gaps between enemies are of equal distance. If they are not then you will have to tap on the screen again to make Mario vault over the enemy.
