I think you just click on the baby and select go to sleep.

what happens if that doesn't come up when u touch the baby?

You need to have the green things above the baby's head then select the baby

If you select a adult sim and have them pick up the infant, you can click the crib and it says "calm baby to sleep"

After you put the baby in the crib, make sure the plumbob is over it's head. Then, tap on the baby like you would tap on an Adult Sim to have their birthday or ultimate makeover. There should be a "go to sleep" or "hibernate" option.
