Question for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

I was doing the ultimate heist quest and I read in a walthrough that to escape, I could get arrested and when I was freed I would still have the elder scroll and boots of springheel. Selfishly I took this path. Now all the ways back into the elder scrolls library are locked by non existent keys and the quest indicator stills points to the grate in the battlemages chamber but I can't get up there. I am now completely willing to sacrifice the boots or anything in order to activate an update of the quest journal and to hand the elder scroll to the gray fox. please I really need help

Sorry, but I think that walkthrough was misleading you. I've seen more than my share of fake walkthroughs for Oblivion, so they're everywhere. And the Oblvion Official Strategy Guide I have doesn't mention anything like that. Since Oblivion has numorous bugs, and quests are supposed to be taken off of the Current Quests when you fail them, or restart, it would be easy for this to mess up.

Are you talking bout after you get the scroll you need to get out of there well if you are then there is a fire place or what you said barrel that you need to activate and then you can go back but you need to put on the boots of springhel jack and then your done

I am talking about after I took the elder scroll I found another way to escape but now I can't finish the quest and I can't go back up to the elder scrolls library

Okay. The walk through was right. Only you forgot a step. You were suppose to activate the grate first. Then get cought. And if that doesn't work then after you get cought go strait to the gray fox even if you indicator doesn't point to him.
