Just have it in your inventory and go up to the statue and activate it. Make sure you do it at the right time, and she should just talk to you and give you the artifact. You don't need to put it in a specific place.

You must have it in your inventory and active the staute at dusk or dawn. (I believe its 6am and 6pm)
