As with any RPG or Adventure game, character progression is usually measured in Levels. Increasing a character's level will usually involve permanently increasing their stats, unlocking new abilities, and more. In this page, we will discuss how character leveling works in Wuthering Waves.
Normally, you can gain EXP from defeating enemies on the field. However, the amount of EXP you'll gain is so miniscule that it's not even worth the time. Thankfully, you have access to farmable consumables called Resonance Potions which will be your primarily way of leveling up your characters. These potions come in different "grades" or rarities, in identifiable color schemes too. Each potion grade (color) gives a fixed amount of EXP for your character and you can use them individually or by batch to instantly increase your character's level by a few levels or until they hit their current level cap. The maximum level your characters (and weapons) can reach is LV90, which can only be achieved through Ascension (please refer to the section below)
You also don't have to worry about the excess EXP as these will be automatically converted into lower-grade resonance potions that you can use for your other characters (or on the same character after the level cap is removed). You can conveniently use the Auto-Select button at the Resonator Upgrade screen to automatically select all the Resonator Potions and either reach the character's level cap or you run out of potions.

| Resonance Potion | Color | EXP Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Resonance Potion | Green | 1000 EXP |
| Medium Resonance Potion | Blue | 3000 EXP |
| Advanced Resonance Potion | Purple | 8000 EXP |
| Premium Resonance Potion | Gold/Yellow | 20000 EXP |
The best and most efficient way of farming for resonance potions is by completing the Simulation Training challenge in Jinzhou. This is a repeatable battle that requires 40 Waveplates per battle to claim your rewards. As you increase your SOL3 Phase level, the quality of potions that you can possibly get improves as well. You can also get Resonance Potions from other sources such as completing quests, finishing events, or from supply chests though not as repeatable as the Simulation Training.
You can only increase a character until a certain cap or limit. To get past this, you'll have to do a process called Ascension, which will require you to submit the required Ascension materials as soon as the characters reach their current level cap. Ascending your characters not only permanently increases their stats, but will also allow them to level up their skills even further.

Take note that even if you already have enough ascension materials, a character's ascension will also be locked behind your Union Level and SOL3 Phase levels. For every 10 Union Levels increased, the SOL3 Phase level increases by 1. At Union Levels 20, 40, and 60, players must complete a Phase Ascension quest to remove the Union Level cap. For more information about the SOL3 Phase Level and the Union system, please refer to our dedicated page about those topics in this guide. While increasing your Sol3 Phase level makes enemies more aggressive and powerful, the quality and quantity of drops will improve considerably as well.
Characters have different ascension materials but will always include boss materials like Tacet Cores. All overworld bosses that drop these ascension materials can be tracked down in the Guidebook and sort the enemy list to display only the "Overlord Class" enemies. There is also a variety of plants that you need. While you can encounter them in the wild, thankfully, you can just buy them in bulk from the Shifang Pharmacy in Jinzhou. The inventory is refreshed weekly so you don't need to worry about running out though you might consider buying all of the stock of the plants you need for ascension before the scheduled weekly reset.

The third ascension material needed falls under the "Weapon and Skill Materials" category such as Howler Cores, Whisperin Cores, Rings, and Masks. These materials can be dropped by ordinary enemies or you can spend Waveplates in Forgery Challenges. As the category's name implies, you'll be sharing the same resources when improving your weapons and skills so prioritize ascending your characters first.
Finally, the quality of the required ascension will increase so don't forget that you can use Synthesis to convert lower-quality materials (green or blue) into higher-quality ones (purple or gold) This is especially true since low-quality materials can be reliably farmed in higher numbers. The conversion has a ratio of 3-to-1 (e.g. three blues to one purple).
