Trek to Yomi Tips and Tricks

Listed below are several Beginner Tips and Tricks which will help you in Trek to Yomi.

Don't Disable Subtitles

Although there is an 'English' option under the 'Language' menu found in the game settings it does not refer to an English dub making subtitles unnecessary. It is only referring to the menu language. There is only one audio track and it is in Japanese. This means if you switch off the subtitles you will not have any idea as to what is going on in the game.

Use Headphones

You will hear plenty of echoing and static when you play Trek to Yomi, so it is recommended that you use headphones to help you hear things better. The poor film quality is intentional as it is part of the art style for the game which pays respects to the retro vibe of the early 1990's and the classic samurai movies that were released during that time.

Change the Game Difficulty

There are three different difficulty settings from which to choose from in Trek to Yomi, plus one which becomes unlocked when you complete the game. These difficulty levels can be changed at any time but keep in mind that doing so will return you to the last checkpoint. There are plenty of checkpoints so take advantage of this feature to play the game on the setting you feel most comfortable with. It is recommended that you start on Medium and decide from there whether the game is too easy or challenging and adjust it accordingly.

Search for Upgrades

It is essential in Trek to Yomi that during your journey you are always searching for upgrades as you will not be able to return to levels. This will mean going off the beaten track and searching thoroughly for upgrades to your health, stamina, and ammunition for your ranged weapons. There is no map you can use as a guide so trying to distinguish which way is the story path and which way is the optional path can be difficult. If you start down one way, and it appears to be story-related you should turn around and make sure you have not missed any of the branch-offs which will have important items for you to find that will affect your experience in the game.

Use Collectibles to Track your Progress

When you look at your collectibles in the menu, you will notice that you get them in order throughout the mission. What this means is that if you're collecting them, you can use them to track how far into a level you are. You can also use this to see if there are any you missed on the way.

Take Advantage of your Ranged Weapons

As you progress in Trek to Yomi you will find three different ranged weapons, and they will each have a different level of strength and speed. The Bow and Ozutsu are able to deal a lot of damage from range while the Shurikens are quick and can be used to create an oppening to attack with your sword. You will be able to find plenty of ammo for all three types of weapons at various checkpoints and branch-offs so don't be afraid to use them.

Parrying Gives Health

In Trek to Yomi you will be able to fully replenish Hiroki's health by reaching one of the checkpoint shrines that are scattered throughout the game. Keep in mind that if you are running low on health and are not near a checkpoint shrine you will be able to keep your health topped up by during combat by parrying. In order to do so you must watch for the glint on your opponent's blade before tapping the counter button on your controller. If you time this correctly you will not only get some health back but also open up your foe for an attack.

Perform Finishing Moves for Additional Health

As you progress through the game Hiroki will gain access to several combos, some of which will stun your opponent upon their completion. When your foe is in this dazed state they will be open to a finishing move that will not only kill off their remaining health but will also give Hiroki some life back which can be useful for replenishing your health if you are low between checkpoint shrines. Keep in mind that this won't work against bosses.

Remember to Breathe

It is important, especially during the later stages of Trek to Yomi that you keep an eye on Hiroki's stamina gauge as allowing it to fully deplete will result in him becoming vulnerable to the enemy until he catches his breath. Unless you have been targeted by a ranged enemy you should save your stamina by sprinting sparingly during combat encounters. Make sure you keep an eye on the stamina gauge during combat and give Hiroke a chance to breathe every so often.
