In a world much different from our own, there exists a multitude of creatures called Pocket Monsters, often called Pokemon for short. The humans of this world keep these creatures as friends and pets, but more importantly, they use them to battle competitively against each other to see who can become the greatest Pokemon Trainer of them all.

You start out as young trainer-in-the-making in the humble little town of Pallet. After you and your childhood friend, now your rival, receive your first Pokemon, the long journey to being a Pokemon Master begins. Scattered all throughout the Kanto region are eight gyms housing Gym Leaders, each one a master of a different type of Pokemon. The ultimate goal? Defeat them all, and certify yourself as a trainer worthy of challenging the toughest trainers in the land: The Elite 4.

The path to becoming a Pokemon master isn't quite that easy, however. Along the way, a criminal organization known as Team Rocket looks to kidnap, abuse, and exploit Pokemon for their own gain. You, as the protagonist, must take down this evil organization, starting at the bottom and working your way up to their leader, Giovanni.

If you're able to conquer the Pokemon League and banish Team Rocket, a final challenge awaits: hidden deep within a cave near Cerulean lies a genetically altered Pokemon, an enhanced version of Mew aptly named Mewtwo. If you make it through the labrynth of the Unknown Dungeon, you can get the chance to battle-- and even capture-- the strongest Pokemon in the region.
