This involves modifying a game file, but it easy to do. Inside the game directory there is a folder called DATA and inside that folder are a bunch of files with an .SBC extension. You'll want to open the file called DATA.SBC with notepad or some text editor. The file is just a list of numbers and we are concerned with the second, third and fourth numbers. The first number "2375" is the year the game takes place, and the 2nd number is the beginner starting money, the second is intermediate start money and third is the most difficult. Just change the number to something higher if you want. I started a game with 750,000 so it does work.
In the game directory locate the DATA folder, there should be a bunch of files with *.SBC extensions...locate the file 'DATA.SBC' and open it with notepad.exe. Its a long list of numbers. The first number is the game start year 2375. The following 3 numbers are the starting money for the 3 difficulty levels, so if you change them and save the file after you will start the game with more money. .
As soon as the game begins enter the operations menu and select pricing. Raise it all the way to 150 to increase revenue. This action will increase credit flow while having no discernible negative consequence. .
A nice feature of the games age and simplicity can be found in the relatively basic economy found within it. Supply and demand are based in a very simple system that sees any planet that demands a good willing to pay for as much of that good as can be shipped to it. If you could manage to ship a billion units to a single planet they will buy every last bit of it as fast as you can move it there..
Through the advanced menu you can find a "Build Custom Ship" option which will allow you to build a ship with any of the hulls within the game before the more advanced propulsion systems are available. Be careful, some hulls are expensive to maintain which can cut into revenue. The Ostrich is very large while having maintenance that is low relative to it's cargo capacity. .
You begin the game with a single ship, the Finch I. Sell it and buy the Sparrow I instead. The maintenance cost of the Finch is higher than even some of the largest ship hulls in the game while having the smallest cargo capacity. The Sparrow will both save money in maintenance and increase earning potential simultaneously. .
Metal and chemical industries produce toxic waste which is toxic to every race within the game with the exception of the Tesarians who will pay a decent amount of money for the stuff. By having a Tesarian planet that produces no industrial good acting as a hub, you can build routes to planets with industries around that hub and rake in massive profit while at the same time eliminating the issues created by toxic waste build-up..
