As I saw in Japanese-language previews of this game, Pokémon from Gold, Silver, and Crystal will indeed feature, but they probably will be confined to the Mystery Islands. The only RS Pokémon that will definitely feature is Deoxys, which resides on the ninth island, accessible with an Aurora Ticket. The Aurora Ticket is expected to be circulated in issues of Nintendo Power a few weeks, maybe months, after the release of the games, as the Eon Ticket was. Obviously, then, this game's going to have a Mystery Events programme or something similar, because an E-Reader would be necessary.

This I guess applies to the aforementioned tickets you need to get to various islands and how you can get you're game to accept stuff from Nintendo Events. Go to any PokeMart, there's a clipboard you'll see on the counter. If you enter "LINK TOGETHER WITH ALL" then save and restart, you will have a mystery gift option on your screen under New Game.
I cannot get it to work, even with friends with wireless, so I guess that's what it's about. Where the heck am I going to find a Nintendo Event anyway? When I lived in NY I remember one but that was 10 yrs ago or so, before all the adapter stuff (or GB!!), and their HQ is in NYC-if you live close I'd visit it!!
YES I think there will be 386 Pokemon for you to catch AFTER you beat the elite 4 however.
Pokemon from johto and hoenn are obtainable whenn you get the national dex
