Final Fantasy VII was the first in the series to jump to it's next platform, the Playstation. And a successful jump it was. Everything about this game was particularly likable, as the game was very easy to pick up and play. Some consider Final Fantasy VII the best role playing game ever created. They could be right.
To me, Final Fantasy VII broke new ground with the use of graphically enhanced cutscenes. I have never seen a game that used cut scenes before, and FFVII really set the stage for how video game RPGs should be played. However, even considering the fact that this was alast-generation game on the PS1, Final Fantasy VII's in-game graphics look terrible. The only thing I liked about the graphics in the game were the environments and the fact that there was a large "world map" to explore. The battle effects and character models sported detail, but other than that, I just can't pass character models that don't even look like people as a good grade.
I was a big fan of the original soundtrack in this game. This was the first Final Fantasy game ever to have an actual score that sounded real. Everything about it perfectly set the mood of the game, and really sucked me in along side the characters. I also really enjoyed the sounds in the game, everything from swinging your sword to casting large spells was done very well. This game was probably too old to have voice-overs for the characters, but to tell you the truth, it really didn't need it. I can't see anything wrong with the sound department here.
This game offers lots of emotion and relationships with it's multiple characters. You'll spend a lot of time figuring out and determining your own opinion on every character in the game as it progresses. You'll also have to be a battle tactician to complete many of the difficult fights ahead of you. Something that I also liked was the fact that you also have to complete puzzles and find items needed to successfully finish a dungeon. Again, I don't have any complaints here; everything was good and didn't seem to hinder the game in any way.
Final Fantasy VII was an extremely long game for it's time (spanning an impossible three disks), and will keep you playing for a very long time. There are literally dozens of things to do in the game, whether it be raising and racing your chocobo, or trying to fight off some of the games hardest optional boss monsters. Leveling up your characters takes a long time, and will keep you playing until the very end. The only little problem with Final Fantasy VII is that, unless you are a die-hard Final Fantasy fan, you probably won't go back and play this game too often after you beat it. All of the surprises will be gone, and the game doesn't give you any extra rewards for finishing it and playing it over.
Overall, I would like to say that Final Fantasy VII has everything in it that a good game should have. The environments were large and set the stage, sound effects were great, and the musical score gave audiences a certain mood about the game. Whether it be you are fighting optional bosses, summoning gods to do your bidding, finding hidden weapons, leveling up your characters, or simply exploring, Final Fantasy VII is a great experience that every gamer should see.
