It is essential in Detective Pikachu Returns that you search for clues and question witnesses as much as possible in order to get the information you require to make deductions and solve cases. This means you exhaust every possible option whenever you arrive on the scene of an investigation. Always look around the scene carefully making sure you don't miss anything.
Whenever your cursor turns into a magnifying glass it signifies that you have stumbled upon a potential clue that is worthy of being included in the journal. The same thing will happen when you come across an NPC that may be holding an important piece of information that is relevant to the case. Make sure when your cursor turns into a magnifying glass you press the A button on your Nintendo Switch controller.
Detective Pikachu or Tim will notify you via in-game dialogue when all the clues have been gathered for the case to proceed. Once you have all the clues you will be able to begin the process of deduction. If you don't get the dialogue it means there are still clues out there you need to discover and collect. Being thorough during your first pass of a crime investigation will reduce the need to backtrack later on in the game if something has been missed.
The initial cases in Detective Pikachu Returns are straightforward to solve but as you advance in the game they will become increasingly more complex. If at any time you become confused or want to go over what you currently know about the case you can do so by pressing the 'X' button on your Nintendo Switch controller. This will bring up your journal which will help you get back on track.
You will be able to read descriptions of physical clues and interviews you have conducted by hovering over the clue icons in your journal. Pressing the left button on your D-pad will enable you to review the progress you have made so far in the case. On the top right of the journal is a helpful flowchart that will show you how far you have come in a certain case.
Make sure you are always prepared for a sudden quick-time event (QTE) during a case. These will involve quickly entering button inputs on your Nintendo Switch controller in order to progress through part of the story. Sometimes the game will give you a warning just before a QTE is about to take place but it is important that you prepare for them regardless by having your hands on your controller during cutscenes.
Make a note of the appearance of the Pokemon you see in Ryme City and their locations. This information will be useful later in the game when you reach Chapters 2 to 4 and cross paths with the Quiz Professor who will quiz you with trivia questions about their looks and mannerisms. By having notes of the Pokemon you have encountered you will be able to quickly answer the questions she asks you. If you have not come across the correct Pocket Monster in Ryme City you will not be able to answer her questions.
