#1 - Star Wars (Debut 1977)

Set on alien worlds Star Wars is the tale of good versus evil, corruption and redemption as it revolves around the Galactic Civil War of the Rebel Alliance trying to free the galaxy from the crutches of the Galactic Empire. This hugely popular series of movies has spawned an extensive media franchise including books, television series, computer and video games, theme park attractions, and comic books.

#2 - Star Trek (Debut 1966)

Star Trek follows the adventures of Captain James T Kirk and his crew aboard the starship USS Enterprise, a space exploration vessel, built by the interstellar federal republic United Federation of Planets in the twenty-third century. Originally a TV series, Star Trek has become a cultural icon worldwide and is still loved by fans today.

#3 - Alien (Debut 1979)

Alien tells the tale of the colony ship Covenant which is bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy when the expedition discovers a mysterious world which is home to a hostile alien life-form that forces the crew into a deadly fight for survival. #4 - Battlestar Galactica (1978)

After the destruction of the Twelve Colonies of Mankind, the only remaining fighter carrier 'Galactica' leads a makeshift fugitive fleet on a desperate search for the legendary planet Earth. Originally a TV series that was regarded as just a Star Wars rip-off Battlestar Galactica has evolved into a popular franchise thanks to a revitalised and reimagined version of the science-fiction series that was released in 2004.

#5 - Dr Who (1963)

This British TV series depicts the adventures of a renegade Time Lord who is an eccentric, highly-intelligent scientist from a distant planet. 'the Doctor' travels through time and space in the Tardis, a device that is larger on the inside than on the outside, which was designed to change its appearance to suit its surroundings. Dr Who is a significant part of British popular culture, one which gained legions of new fans when it was revived in 2005.
