The Top 10 Most Anticipated Games for the 2014/2015 Video Game Season

08. Dragon Age: Inquisition (18 November EA Games)

The Dragon Age franchise has a number of stand-out elements associated with it - and we are not talking about its controversial nature. The game series is well known for deep character development, sympathetic protagonists, and very heavy role-playing mechanics.

Developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts, Inquisition is the sequel to Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II, making it the third major game in the Dragon Age franchise.

The newest title in the series fuses elements of both previous games, with multiple playable races - both male and female including human, dwarf, elf, and Qunari - in a world that is larger with a focus on exploration.

A new combat system places a tighter focus upon the player rather than simply button-mashing - taking into account factors like what they do to prepare for battle, the relative positions taken, and how cohesive the party members are in forming a team.

Another surprise is the return of the Tactical View from the PC version of the first game - which makes an appearance in all of the versions of this one.

Romance has always played a major role in game play, but this time around the actual mechanics for romance are very different - in place of a strictly dialogue-based approach the game now uses the environment and events that, based on each individual character and their unique personality, will have different results depending on each.

Perhaps the most important difference between Inquisition and the previous titles is the new focus upon player choices. Previously the development team, responding to criticism to the previous games, vowed to give the player choice system a much heavier weight than before.

There is also a deeper customization system for armor and items, allowing players to make the items more personal to the character who receives it, the rumor being that the player will be able to alter its color as part of the appearance options.

The development team unofficially confirmed that game saves from the previous two titles will be read by the game in order to set up the starting world so that it is perfectly consistent with all of the previous choices that the player has made - which is an important element to continuity.

All of those are great reasons for players to be eager to receive this one on launch day, but the most often mentioned feature in our research is the open-world dynamics that have been promised.

Where Dragon Age was previously a rail-based game in terms of world actions, this offering in the series has been said to be heavily influenced by games like Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - which means it will have a far more open feel to it.

While it is not going to be quite as wide-open as Skyrim, word is that Inquisition does not re-use game environments, and that alone is worth praise considering how widely they abused that in DA2.
