Top 10 RPGs for Genre Newcomers

1. Pokemon X/Y

That's right, Game Freak's massive monster collecting series is very well one of the best ways to get into the RPG genre. Many older gamers have probably already given this series a shot, but the newest titles, Pokemon X and Pokemon Y, offer plenty of new content for veterans of the series as well as plenty of mechanics to make the ease into RPGs easy for gamers of all ages.

To those that are unfamiliar, or have largely forgotten the core of Pokemon games, it revolves around building a team of six monsters to defeat the eight Gym Leaders and the Elite Four to become the Pokemon Champion. Every monster has certain elemental matchups, called types, that make them resistant or weak to certain other types of attacks. Learning how to use type match-ups to your advantage is the crux of the game, and working in a variety of strategies with only six Pokemon with four attacks each allows for plenty of experimentation and rewards.

The newest 3DS titles offer even more little tweaks that help make the experience more streamlined than ever. The new and improved Exp. Share spreads experience around on your whole team, minimizing grinding, and the new mini-games have direct and indirect enhancements on your Pokemons' fighting abilities. If you really find Pokemon enjoyable, you can even delve deeper into the games' advanced mechanics, including breeding and tournament level play.

Pokemon X and Y's online components make it easy to trade and battle online, offering plenty of playability even after the main game is done. Given the 3DS's online functionality, it's even easier than ever to connect to friends and strangers alike, making easy to test your strength or get more Pokemon to round out your team. There's even plenty of Pokemon communities that are welcoming to players of any skill level.

If nothing else, the Pokemon games are the ideal starting point for anyone wanting to give RPGs a try. Simple yet complex, they're easy to get into but offer very rewarding gameplay for those that learn the basics.

Conclusion
