If facing phantom fish, do not use the Vigoorian Flail, as Ayane advises. Instead, just equip the Dragon Sword or the Kitetsu. Then, when running, jump and press X. Keep jumping as you land and you will not be hurt and will actually kill a lot of the fish.

I will warn you now if you don't have time don't do this.
There are several place to do this but the best and easiest is in the first chapter. Once you get to the small square room where white and brown ninjas come out of the rotating walls fight them off. After doing so move towards the trap door, but don't step on it. Go around it and cut the banner on the wall, walk through it save the game at the dragon thingy, re-enter the room and do it again.
They continue to drop essence and as long as you don't die you can do it all you want, the white guys drop blue orbs(life). Save every 3 or 4 rounds of ninja killing.I did this for about 1.5 hours and have around 50,000 essence, very usefull.

On chapter 4(city of fiends) of the game, when you get to Pleasure street walk towards the club.
Have a look behind you, there should be one of them pink flower things that ayane leaves for you throughout the game. It will tell you of a secret weapon that only a select few know about. To your right there is an aley way with a scarab at the end. Go back to the start aley way do a wall run on the wall to your right then to the next and then again.With abit of practice you should be able to get up on the ledge where you will find the windmill shurikens and a big X that charges your energy up.
