Each chapter is divided into "zones" within a "zone" skylanders of a particular element are "stronger" which means they are a little harder to kill, and maybe they can "hit" a little harder. Eon tells you when you move into a new zone that skylanders of a particular element are stronger here. You do not HAVE TO use skylanders of the recommended element, that is just a guideline or help to enable you to succeed. EARLY in the game before your skylanders have leveled up ANY, this might be important. The longer you play, the more your skylanders level up. As you buy upgrades they become even stronger. By the time you reach roughly the halfway point through the game, you MAY choose to ignore the "recommended" skylander element. About the only time you MUST use a skylander of a particular element is when you are dealing with fire or water. WATER skylanders can cross water or swim in it. FLYING skylander can fly above the water but can't swim. FIRE skylanders are needed when your skylander must go into an area that is either on fire, OR has a surface of molten lava. In the mines skylanders of the earth element can break through the rock without using a pickaxe. Prism Break can break the purple crystals using his prism fists. He does not need bombs. They are some other exceptions like this, but generally speaking, once your skylanders become stronger, you can use ANY skylander in any zone. You MAY have to use a skylander of a particular element to open one of the Elemental gates, but once the gate is OPEN, you can switch right back. I use that technique on Crystal Eye Castle, to open the UNDEAD gate, the switch back to the skylander I am trying to level up. BECAUSE that undead gate has a bunch of bad guys in a cluster that are relatively easy to kill so my inexperience skylander gets LOTS of XP points. I use Crystal Eye as the best level for LEVELING UP new skylanders. For getting lots of money, I use Darkwater Cove and bypass the gates. Crystal Eye has only one puzzle to solve. Same with Darkwater Cove, so they don't take long to play, which means fast leveling up and fast money accumulation for buying upgrades.
