Why my eruptor doesn't work I put him in the portal of power and says put your skylander in the portal of power but I just did

My son's lightcore Eruptor won't work for the game Skylanders Giants on the portal of power for our Play Station 3 console. He is very upset :(. Any tips for us? The game says he is able to be a part of the gaming experience but he just won't work.
I had a problem with having my guys show up too, try moving your portal further away from the rest of your systems. It fixed my problem.
