This is my opinion of the Sims 2 which I will compare (slightly) to the Sims.
While the Sims 2 is a fantastic game, sometimes you just can't beat playing the good old sims. Maxis have developed this game so much it's almost hard to believe. I've put a good bit of work into this review. I hope it helps with a choice of to buy or not to buy the Sims 2.
The graphics in this game are amazing, much improved on the Sims who sometimes made strange, jerky movements. Every last detail is included in this game. You can zoom in as far as possible and the grass still looks pretty real. The filth that gathers on the kitchen counters is greatly detailed too, and not over the top.
Advantages: Everything looks fantastic.
Disadvantages: They sometimes make the game load slower.
The sound in this game is good. Much better than the Sims, which was just plain weird. The Sims speech, while still simish, is clearer and easier to laugh at.
The music is alright, but can get a little annoying at times. The music on the stereo's are a lot better with choices of Salsa, Heavy Metal etc.
Advantages: Music is more interesting to listen to and you can change the background music in Buy Mode and such.
Disadvantages: The music can get annoying.
The idea of this game is much better than the Sims. In the Sims the sims didn't die of old age or illness etc. and children never grew up. But in the Sims 2, Women get pregnant, children grow up, the sims can die of old age. They can get fat, sick and the teenagers even get acne!
Advantages: It makes much more sense than the Sims, sims have days off, children get homework etc.
Disadvantages: There can't really be any crazy expansion packs (like Makin' Magic) added because the Sims 2 is similar (for a game) to real life.
There is loads to do like designing houses to the last detail. Eg. Your dining room chair can match the bathroom sink. The option to change colours in furniture is really handy and makes the game more enjoyable. Whereas in the Sims to get a room to colour co-ordinate you might of had to buy the most expensive dining table and the cheapest chairs.
Advantages: Construction and the other new options are really cool and can keep you busy for ages.
Disadvantages: After building a load of houses the initial thrill of complete design wears off.
The game is much better than the Sims - to a certain extent. After having the game for a number of weeks/months (depending on how much you play it) the fun of it wears off, and you feel the need to buy an expansion pack. Which is well and good but then that gets boring too. My advice is if you do get sick of playing the Sims 2, take a break. Don't play it for a month or so. Then when you play it again it's like a new(ish) game, therefore enjoy it again.
Nevertheless, the Sims 2 is a good game, I've played it, bought expansion packs, neglected it for long periods of time. But I've always gone back and played it again. Why? Because it's a fantastic game.
