Since the rathalos is weak to ice I would recomend the blango decimator. You get it by buster sword->blango destroyer->~~~+->blango decimator...

Good luck

If I'm perfectly honest I had ALOT of trouble on my first try, I recomend using a longsword
As frost flare said I think blango decimator is best, I have the top end level of that sword tree and trust me if you can beat g rank dodobrango (blangonga) then it's well worth it
Finally ice attributes don't matter too much, examine it's habits (for example it almost ALWAYS goes to area 9 after it leaves the nest which is area 5) when it flies up place urself under it's shadow to avoid it's sky attacks, the rest i'll leave to you
Take the red pill

Use a GS with atleast 888 ATK. There are way to many oppenings for you not to use a GS. No matter what, always go for d head, with an ATK of 888 or more u'll kill him with atleast 7 or 9 lvl3 charges... Deppending on Rank.

I would say to use a GS or a SNS for a few small reasons. The first is the ability to block, since your new to killing the bigger baddies this is probably close to essential. Without knowledge of the wyverns movements your bound to get thrown around without blocking. Second, both of these weapon types have high damage models that can be made early in the game. For SNS I would recommend going for include Frost Edge/Frost Edge+ (Ice element, very good for the later missions like 4 Horns), Eternal Strife(High Dragon element, Los isnt as weak to dragon as he is ice, HOWEVER azure los is weaker to dragon and provides a much better armor set.), Velocidrome Bite and the upgraded version(No element here, based on high raw damage for simple materials), Deathprize(Regular los is highly susceptible to paralysis and the damage isn't to bad on this weapon), and late in the game of course Azure Ogre Blade which is the best dragon elemental SNS in the game. For GS I would recommend Ravager/Ravager+, Chicken Decapitator, Blue Claw Blade, Great Pincer, Deadly Serpent or Silver Serpent Blade. After you get better I reccomend practicing very often with hammers/GS's/Duals/LS's. 3/4 of them can't block but these are the heavy hitters later in the game for the most part.
Rathalos Tactics: Look, Listen, Learn. When you first encounter Rathalos it is probably a good idea to bring a few spare flashbombs and maybe even a stun/pitfall trap. When your first looking for him (depending on having seen the cinematic) he should fly to area 9. Now you have two options in this area. The area he starts in is rather small and you don't have much room for error even with a small los, What you can do to gain a little advantage is while he's drinking, smash the cats in the area and wait for him to walk around the corner. Let him chase you down the path and you'll be in a much larger fighting area. His attack include: Charging, Biting, Fire Balls, Tail whips, Flying Charge. His aerial attacks include: Claws(ouch!), 3 Fireballs, 1 Strong Fireball and a Dive Bomb style attack. When he is in the air is my favorite time to pick on him. Hide in his shadow and after you here the attack end you can start charging your GS for cutting his tail off on hitting him right in the kisser. Hes also extremely susceptible to flash bombs while flying which sends him hurtling into the ground. When on land watch how he turns around to determine the attack type, if he spins around fast, it will usually be a charge or charge/bite combination. What your hoping for is a slow turn which is when your going to want to get close. Slow turns are usually fireballs or aerial charges. Fire Balls are preferred here as it gives you plenty of time for tail cutting OR a full lvl 3 charge to land on his head, this is the best way to get big damage on him fast. If it's looking like an aerial charge you can drop an unsheathe on him before he takes off for the extra damage. Once you get good you can do this same tactic on his regular charges or even stun him mid run with a well timed charge ;). Also Last but NOT LEAST, when he does get tired and fly to his hole to sleep for health, always use a lvl 3 charge on his head. You can get a "Shiny" to drop giving you the equivalent of an extra carve and this usually finishes the fight. On regular los I'd say this is the end for him 9/10 times and if it isnt it's only 5 or less unsheathe attacks away. Hope all this helps, tried to answer twice but my browser messed up on me. Good Luck Hunting.
