Well you could go elemental or non-elemental try using a dual blade with a high sharpness and with a strong attack like a holy saber with I think with 196 attack and water element and since it doesn't use any materials that you can't get in the 4 star quests though you still need to raise your guild rank because some materials are there and it really helps. There isn't any way to see a monster's health(though if there is please notify me! ;P) though you can tell if it's dying like in the shogun ceanataur it will bubble black and for some wyverns and monsters it will just limp away and sleep.XD

You need to learn the monsters actions to tell how much damage it's taking, one thing to look for is when their frenzies become more frequent (for most monsters) this tells you they are near the end.
Also they will flinch and/or fall over if you do alot of damage.

As for dual blades, "Bladed Edge" is powerfull and has good sharpness.
You will need: 2 Ceanataur claws and 4 Ceanataur shell from the Shogun Ceanataur, 8 small Ceanataur shl from the little blue crabs in the volcano and 8 Carpenterbugs which can be found by bug catching or at pokke farm.

You can estimate how much health a creature has by the number of times it has enraged or flinched (there are different flinches for each creature and bosses like fatalis have 2 different flinches). Either that way or you can mod your PSP with firmware and make it so it shows the creature's health. If you want good dual blades try and make them after you're a higher HR otherwise theres no point in it when it's weak. If you really want dual blades try and beat all the 3* & 4* guild quests to unlock the red lao shan and maybe you can make a blade from him.
