Is snake alive or do you play as raiden the whole game

Yes Snake is alive. You play as Snake during the the tanker chapter but on the plant chapter you play as Raiden. Snake is there too to help you.

Snake is pliskin but unfortunatly you have to play as that sissy raiden for the main story but he does help out a little
