Normal mode is faster and easier, expert is harder, harder enemies and I believe less items

Well easy mode will probably be faster since it is easy :p

Easy mode is faster because you can kill things and get through the story itself easier. Expert mode has more and stronger enemies, along with fewer items.
If you're just starting the game, I'd recommend easy mode. But if you want a challenge, definitely do expert mode.
