You do not need to do the challenges of the nerds/jocks, etc to get further in the game. But I highly reccomend you to beat them. When you beat those, they unlock other areas that have save and sleep spots in them.

If you want to beat the game faster, it's technicaly not essential to beat the clique challenges, but if you like to complete a lot of challenges in one day, and at 12:00 AM you're usually not near the Academy, it's very helpful.
