Sorry to say it, but she will not be coming home. You may see her around shops or coming to kick your garbage can..but if the police could not find her in the first few minutes of her dissaperance she is too far away and won't be coming home. Try to take care of your sims!

I had this problem with one of my teenage characters really recently but managed to salvage the missing character. If you have the University expansion pack, you can go on the 'send students to university' button and all eligible teenage characters are listed. Your missing sim will be listed on this list. If you select the sim that is missing you can send them to university and they once again become one of your controllable sims.
