These buttons: < > What's funny is that I was so confused the first time I started playing sims too! They should have made it easier to turn things around! And that also works for any other item. Also, when you don't want to buy wallpaper or carpeting for the whole room just to see what it loods like, there's a trick you can use. You can move the mouse so one of the squares on the floor has the carpet (or wallpaper) you're thinking of. Then you can press "shift" and you can see the whole room! Also, say you're in buy mode and you want 5 tables, instead of having to keep pressing on the table you want and dragging it over, a quick way to do it is to press shift, click to buy the table, and another one will appear! When I want lots of tables, that's what I do! Hope I helped!
