Sounds daft but you don't have anything running in the background do you?
Like an antivirus or something? SOmetimes those kind of things interfere with the game.
I don't really know any other reasons why it would do that. If it is playing for hours usually it just slows horribly when the ram memory is low.

Another possibility is that if your hard drive that the sims 2 is saved on has a small amount of space left, it causes problems. The sims 2 takes up SOO much space-which is fine if you have an external drive or don't have alot of programs or(unlike me) your C drive was made with alot of space. You will probably not like this idea, but it may be a good idea to move the family to another lot or delete it.
