You have to keep challenging him & defeating him. It took me about 3 times to actually finish the quest

I defeated him the first time but after I defeated him I was no longer his friend and I think he potentially died or just left. ):

I finished the quest by challenging him to a fight and defeating him. I'm married to Almeric so it was no problem. But I can't find him anywhere! Did he die or something??
