I have this issue too and have done that but doesn't do anything.....

Go to the woodpile against the wall in the tavern and you should have the option to search, that's where I found it. I took the advice of others & bought a stick from Almeric but when I met with Mortemer it wouldn't allow me to give it to him so I had to find the stick in the tavern.
