How do you turn a sim into a teen

I'm on the quest the pirate and his goddess. It says to call a teen to the community center I did but I think I have a preteen so I was wonder how could I turn this preteen into a teen

You can either bake a birthday cake or, if you have played to the point where aging is added, wait for them to time out.
