How do I place a staircase?

Question for The Sims FreePlay
How do I place a staircase? Everytime I try this I only get the red cross and no green tick. I have empty floors above and below so I don't understand why it wont work?

You have floors above but do you have rooms built on the upper floors yet? You need to have rooms first before you can place the stairs.
If you still have trouble placing, then it might be the rooms you want to place the stairs are too small to accommodate.

Try to build some rooms first in the second floor before putting some stair cases.
