I find that Fire works better in the long run, Grass tends to be too weak, and Water wont help you facing the elite 4.

I would do water, cause I think that fire type Pokemon are the hardest to beat.
Dozin26 answered:

Grass does well against gyms but not the elite 4, like 100 King said water dosntt help facing the elite 4, but fire is strong the Whole way through and has great moves.

If I had to choose it would fire or grass

I would suggest use fire pokemon.. It's stronger..

cheating-is-good answered:

To tell you the truth, there is no best type of Starter Pokemon. Each person will have a different type of Pokemon that they like, and each person will have a different strategy that they use for battles. You should choose your Starter Pokemon based on what Pokemon you like, not what others say, but now it is time for the facts. The first fact is that both the Water Pokemon, Squirtle, and the Leaf Pokemon, Bulbasaur have a much easier time going up against the Gym Leader's Pokemon than Charmander does. You could easily sweep through the first three gyms with Bulbasaur, and Squirtle is good for the later gym leaders. The second fact is that the fire Pokemon, Charmander, will have a much easier time facing the Elite Four than Bulbasaur or Squirtle will. Personally, I chose Charmander, but it's your choice.

Hope this helps.

We Also Need To Remember That Water Beats Fire
laszloiscool answered:

THE BEST Starter IS A GRASS POKEMON, THEY WILL RAISE FASTER THAN THE OTHERS, BUT THEY AREN'T REALLY STRONG. FIRE POKEMONS ARE STRONG BUT DIFFICULT TO TRAIN. WATER POKEMON ARE HALF-FAST RAIS AND HALF-STRONG. I WAS CHOSING A FIRE POKEMON. BUT THAT'S MY CHOICE.

MASSI.B ( POKEMON EXPERT/TRAINER )I NOW EVERYTHING, JUST ASK...

frogbreeder answered:

The best Starter is squartle because in the game it's hard in the beginning
Becauseof Misty but save up 80,000 P($) then go to the celdon Game Corner
Buy icebeam teach it to your squartle don't teach it blizzard because in the Elite Four and on Lance icebeam is better against his dragon Pokemon and good against venasaur

pspdj answered:

Fire works best in every Pokemon games as the low level Pokemon are bug type at the start and the fire Pokemon will level up faster and easier

Water
Guest answered:

Fire type starters usually have the critical attack factor that water types and grass types don't have. Like it or not, Pokemon is based on speed and attack and not defense.
