05. Killer Instinct X1

This one is an odd duck... When the X1 was just approaching its release we received an email from Microsoft LIVE with a code in it for the game Killer Instinct - which at the time of the Xbox One launch was both a launch-title and a free-to-play title!

The thing was the code that we received basically unlocked for free the launch characters that we would ordinarily have had to pay for. Lacking that code we would have only been able to use the random rotating characters that the base game allowed.

Unaware of that at the time, we thought this was a universally-offered game for all of the new X1 owners, thanks to the digital nature of some of the launch titles we thought that this was the bees knees and were telling all our mates to play it - but of course they lacked that code... Our bad.

The original game we received - known as Killer Instinct: Season One - included the characters of Glacius, Jago, Orchid, Sabrewulf, Sadira, Spinal, and Thunder for free, though we mostly just played with Jago.

Since the initial release and the release of Killer Instinct: Season Two the game features add-on content for the standard $4.99 expansion fee for characters like Aganos, Cinder, Fulgore, Hisako, Kan-Ra, Maya, Riptor, and TJ Combo.

Fortunately in addition to playing the free content that is part of the base game, players can buy the Combo Breaker Add-On Packs for both Season One and Two ($19.99 respectively) that include all of the characters for each Season (that was the code we received for Season One it seems).

That is good news for gamers who happen to be fans of the arcade-style fighting game - which is what Killer Instinct is, because for relatively short money ($19.99 as opposed to around $40 for the characters if they are purchased individually). On the other hand, players can simply purchase one of the characters for $4.99 to get started if that is the route they prefer.

Thanks to the expanded Season Two and the new characters the game has ballooned to a total Gamerscore of 2,475 spanning 231 Achievements!

Considering its faithful presentation of the classic Arcade-style Fighting genre fans will have no trouble understanding how it is that KI made it to the Number Five Slot in our Top 10 List. If you are not a fan of the genre, now is a great time to try out KI and learn why you may actually be a fan and not know it - yet Smile
