What makes this one stand out is its history and the long-standing fascination that its Forgotten Realms origins and 4th Edition Dungeons & Dragons ruleset origins bring to the table. Well, that and the fact that this is not its first rodeo!

Created by veteran game wizards Cryptic Studios (City of Heroes / Star Trek Online), Neverwinter delivers an action-based MMORPG game play style experience (but not an actual MMO in the normal sense) that is set in the city of Neverwinter - a location that should be very familiar to D&D gamers past and present.

Created using the free-to-play model, the game has some pretty serious goals, meaning to compete along side commercial game mainstays such as the Elder Scrolls and World of Warcraft - but in the free-to-play MPRPG category.

In Neverwinter the players get to team up with up to four other players in order to explore what is one of the most loved D&D settings of all time.

Its revenue stream is largely down to player purchase of in-game money, though items are meant ot eventually be added, while the vast majority (actually as far as we can tell ALL) of the main content is available completely free of charge.

What sets Neverwinter apart and makes it special is the focus upon story-telling as its primary game role. That is great news for players who are already fans of the story behind it, and even better news for gamers who are too young to remember the original, and have yet to truly experience D&D at its best - which Neverwinter is.

Those elements combined to secure it the Number Four Slot on our Top 10 List!
