Often celebrated as the first free-to-play online multi-player game for Xbox Live Arcade on the Xbox 360, the game was developed by Toylogic and officially released on 12 October, 2012 as a free-to-play / free download for Xbox Live Gold members through the Xbox Live Marketplace.

In April of this year a port for the Xbox One was released, which was good news for gamer fans who had made the jump to the current gen hardware!

While Happy Wars does include a short story-driven single-player campaign, its raison d'etre is found in its multi-player online game mode, which is of the role-playing strategy game genre,

The games premise for the multi-player mode is both simple and complex: consisting of two teams of up to 15 players each, the opposing teams are challenged to destroy the castle belonging to the other team, while at the same time defending the one that belongs to them.

Each player can choose from a number of primary classes - Cleric, Mage and Warrior - as well as some sub-classes that include Berserker (Warrior), Engineer (Cleric) and Zephyr (Mage).

The core strategy in the game consists of a combination of level-based player class skills in attack and special attack that is complemented by special group abilities and item-based tactics.

For the skill-based abilities the primary factors are down to how many players participate in the player using that special skill, while the item-based abilities are actually more a part of the micro-transactions game revenue system than they are level-based.

The ability to spend money to gain advantage in the game is one of the reasons that it has been heavily criticized however despite that fault, it has generated a loyal (if fairly small) player base that makes for some exciting play.

Though it has been out for quite a while, the game is still undergoing development tweaking that impacts not just its performance but its capabilities as well.

Happy Wars started out as one of the flawed entries from the previous generations that in spite of its flaws offered a fun play experience - but its transition to the current gen console, and the intentions of the development team to continue to expend and improve it are how - and why - it ended up as our Number Six pick for our Top 10 F2P games!
