Top 10 Free-2-Play Games on MS Live
09. Project Spark X1
Originally announced at the Microsoft Press Event for E3 2013, Project Spark is a "game maker" type of video game released as part of the Xbox One Beta in March 2014 (it was also a Beta release for Microsoft Windows 8.1).
The complete game is based on Kodu Game Lab and was released on October 7, 2014 as a Free-to=Play title via LIVE.
In Project Spark the player can use the Xbox gamepad, a keyboard and mouse, Kinect and touch-based SmartGlass to build and create games, movies and other experiences which they can then upload to the servers, where other players can then download and play them, and even download and modify them!
The game supports scenario and level-based play, allowing players to choose whether to start from a blank map or a pre-designed level, and then modify it adding in goals or actions, and even battles. It features tools to customize the topography of the level, adding animal and plant life, as well as to program actions for specific objects, like a rock that bounces when a player is nearby - that last being one of the examples in its featured announcement.
The game was developed by Team Dakota as a community games project, with the stated intention of promoting the use of Microsoft's other products - SmartGlass being a specific example - in order to create both an accessible and compelling game play experience.
That they did, which is why Project Spark scores the Number Nine slot in our Top 10 List!
