During the quest 'Getting a Clue' if you have Dogmeat with you you can refer to him for the purposes of being a bloodhound.

During the Quest "When Freedom Calls" after you clear out all the Raiders and meet Preston Garvey talk to Mama Murphy and she'll refer to your dog as Dogmeat then his name will change.
