I am towards the end of the game, right about to rescue the mother from the prison and all of the suddenn a green guild seal looking icon has appeared in the middle of the screen on the bottom and will not go away...what is this and does it mean I should be doing something?

I have no idea what it means but I defeated the game and it has nothing to do with the green thing so don't worry about it.
If you have Xbox live then it means that you have a party invite if you don't then I have no idea
That usually means that you have experience to spend. Hold down the indicated button (usually the down button on the d-pad) to teleport, and go back to the guild, where you can use your experience points. Otherwize, that comment about the Xbox live thing is probably right.
