The first thing you need to do in Valheim is collect supplies, to begin with you will not have any tools, but this will not stop you from being able to gather wood and stone. In order to gather wood you just need to punch small trees or keep an eye out for fallen branches. Stone can be found by finding small black colored rocks that are scattered all across the ground.

Once you have a decent amount of both wood and stone you will be able to craft your first tool which will be a one-handed Stone Axe which you can then use for basic tree-felling or as a weapon. This particular axe is only effective on softer woods such as fir, beech, and pine trees. It cannot cut down birch or oak trees. To craft the Stone Axe you will need Wood x5 and Stone x4.

Unlike other survival games there is no repair cost in Valheim, so there is no reason why you shouldn't always keep your weapons and equipment in top condition. When you stand at your Workbench you will see tabs for 'Craft' and 'Upgrade', to their left you will see a square image of a hammer, this icon represents your repair tool. You will not be able to select a specific item you want repaired, clicking the hammer will cycle through your inventory and repair each damaged item one by one until everything is fixed. Make sure you do this every time you use your Workbench.

The Abyssal Harpoon comes in particularly useful when you are hunting any creature that has a tendency to run away, or for dragging sea creatures out of the water to die on dry land. Valheim is primarily a survival game and as such you will need to gather various resources in order to craft the items you need to survive the environment you have been placed in, these include copper, tin, wood, flint, and raw meat. Listed below is a list of these resources and how you are most likely to obtain each of them in the game.

In order to lean new crafting recipes in Valheim you simply have to pick up the required ingredients. The first crafting recipe you will obtain is for the Stone Axe which will occur once you have picked up a piece of wood and a stone. After that will be the Club and then the Hammer which will complete your first set of tools. When you then find Flint near the shore in Green Forest you will unlock the next set. It is not necessary to fill your inventory with everything you find, you just need to pick up at least one of everything to unlock a new recipe which once you have will enable you to focus on picking up only what you need.

The Chopping Block and the Tanning Rack are two items in your Crafting menu that don't function, their purpose however is to upgrade your Workbench. Crafting the Chopping Block and placing it near your Workbench will upgrade the Workbench to Level 2 and crafting the Tanning Rack will upgrade your Workbench to Level 3 when placed beside it. It is important that you craft these two items as soon as possible as upgrading the Workbench will allow you to upgrade weapons, tools, and clothing to Level 2 and 3. This basically means you will give your weapons the ability to deal more damage and your clothing the ability to give you more protection.

As you explore the open world of Valheim you will occasionally come across small shacks and hovels in a state of disrepair which are a useful source to quickly harvest wood. Instead of smashing these derelict buildings with a weapon use your Hammer to create a workbench and place it on the ground inside them and then start destroying the building by middle-clicking your mouse while holding the hammer. Doing this will enable you to quickly strip a building for it's wood by destroying walls, floors, and roof pieces. Make sure before dismantling a building you have a look around to see if it contains any chests with loot.

The number of slots your inventory has in Valhiem is 32 so the amount of space you have is limited. It is therefore important that you only pick up what you need right now otherwise you will become encumbered by weight which is something you want to avoid. Essentials such as wood for building and food for eating should always be picked up and used, and not hoarded.

One of your first priorities in Valheim is to build a Workbench which you will be able to do once you have crafted a hammer from Wood x3 and Stone x2. It is essential that you build a workbench as soon as possible as it will enable you to:

- Repair damaged or broken tools.
- Upgrade your tools and weapons.
- Craft new and more complex tools and items.
- Build and deconstruct building parts nearby.

Crafting the Hammer unlocks the Workbench recipe which requires Wood x10. To craft the Workbench you need to click Mouse-2 to open the 'Build' menu, select the 'Crafting' tab and choose the Workbench. All you need to do then is finding some space on the ground to place it.

It is essential that you are aware of the wind direction when you are hunting animals (especially deer), as they are sensitive to scent and if they smell your presence in the vicinity they will run away long before they see you.

There are two ways in which you can determine which way the wind is blowing and remain stealthy while hunting. You can either check the tiny arrow in the lower left corner of your minimap which indicates the current direction the wind is blowing or by looking at the white streaks in the game world that represents the wind.

In Valheim you can increase your max health and stamina for a set amount of time by eating food. Eating food will also heal you every tick, a tick in Valheim is an in-game unit of time that lasts approximately 10 real world seconds. You will be able to see what the effects of the different foods will be by hovering over the food item in your inventory.

It is possible to eat up to three different food items at any one time and all of their effects will become active and stack. In order to enter cheats in Valheim you must press F5 to bring up the console command box. Before you can enter any of the cheat codes listed below you must type 'iamacheater'. These cheats can only be used in single-player and will not work on multiplayer server. To disable cheats on your game you simply have to type 'iamacheater' again into the console command box.
