Super Mario 64 DS is a remake of Super Mario 53 for the N64. The game is almost the same, except for a few things. Instead of starting as Mario, you start as Yoshi. Also, there are 30 more stars than there were in the original, bringing the total to 150 stars to collect. The story is this: Mario receives an invitation from Princess Peach. She has baked a cake for him. Mario decides to go to the castle, along with Luigi and Wario, while Yoshi sleeps on the roof. What they don't know is that Bowser has already taken control of the castle. He locks Mario, Luigi, and Wario into three rooms. Yoshi is awakened by Lakitu, who tells him to save Mario and the castle. Then the adventure begins.
Compared to the original, the graphics are actually better. Things look more fluid and solid compared to the previous version. For a DS game, the graphics are quite good and outmatch the N64 graphics of the game. For example, Mario is no longer shiny, thus he looks much better.
No Mario game can be complete without good background music accompanied by cool sounds/voices. This game provides all that, bringing the classic Mario music back from the original, as well as making it sound even better, providing a more enjoyable experience.
Playing the game is very easy. Controls can be changed into three modes. The first mode utilizes the D-Pad and A, B, X, and Y. This is probably the most common and easiest way to play. Another way is to change movement control to the stylus, which is actually easier to use with the wrist pad. The third mode is a sort of mix of the other two. The goal is to gather Stars from the various paintings in the castle, as well as finding a few secret Stars, fighting Bowser and other bosses along the way. Unlocking characters is also a primary goal. They are necessary to collect every star. There are also rabbits that go with each character. Catching them allows you to play various mini-games.
The game is not extensively long story-wise. However, finding all the stars could take awhile. Also, unlocking and playing Mini-games could be quite fun as well. The multi-player aspect of this game does not provide much entertainment however. Nevertheless, the game should be worth the money.
The game gets a 9 out of 10 because the game is a wonderful remake of the first, plus a little more fun. Those that played the N64 version will still love this game and seeing the difference between the two. The game itself is a true classic, brought to the modern era through the Nintendo DS.
