Sonic Riders brings back a fairly old element of the original Sonic Drift and Sonic R games, which is the fact that in this game, it's all about your racing skills. It doesn't matter how many rings you collect, or even how fast you can run now. It's just a simple matter of skill.
Sonic Riders is a new release, adding onto the already popular Sonic the Hedgehog series. This game was supposed to be released in honour of Sonic's 15th anniversary (as well as the new ones coming out soon). Yet, this game was released in February in the US and in March here in the UK. Earlier than 23rd June, which was the 15th year since Sonic blasted onto our screens.
As far as the Graphics go, I can see a definite improvement since Shadow the Hedgehog. While Shadow the Hedgehog used Graphics much like Sonic Heroes, the Riders graphics are certainly a step up. The interesting part about these graphics is that they combine a sort of Sonic Heroes style character with better backgrounds, which is nicer on the eyes than leaving the graphics like they did in Shadow's game.
Sound is always split into two for me, I rate music and sound effects out of 5, and then voices and voice acting out of 5.
Sadly, another poor set of voice acting gives this game a 2/5 for the voice acting. Unfortuneatly, the new 4Kids voices in the game never fail to disappoint me. They don't seem to fit the characters they were given to voice.
Luckily, music and sound effects bump Sound's Total up to 6/10, by Music getting a 4/5. The Music mostly fits the environments, although it is annoying how they recycle the tunes on the different levels. The Sound Effects are good too, especially when you take corners.
Much like other racing games, Sonic Riders gives you more choice on who to play as, which is good news if you get fed up of playing as Sonic over and over again. Although there is a Story Mode, there's also a Normal Race Mode where you can brush up on your racing skills. Not only that, but your choice of characters is varied too. Although at first, you may find your choice is very limited (seven characters in fact, including the three new bird characters introduced) your character collection will eventually grow.
The actual gameplay can get a little confusing. Particularly since the buttons to perform a tight turn and to brake your board are the same. Performing the special actions a character has can be quite complex too. As they say though, practice makes perfect!
There's Story Modes to complete, Missions to finish and a whole lot of other things to do as well as unlock extra characters and eventually an extra special gear for Sonic. These objectives add onto gameplay time. However, once you've finished these objectives, Sonic Riders will probably start gathering dust on your shelf, only to be let loose when your friends come over.
If you're a Sonic fan like me, it's definately worth getting the game and at least seeing what it's like, even if you just rent it for a few days. Multiplayer is definately worth it, and gives you a refreshing change from racing the CPU over and over until you find it predictable.
In conclusion, it's a decent game, but their could definately be room for improvement!
