In the beginning, all pokemon were created equal. This is also true for the starters available in this incarnation of the Pokemon world.
All Pokemon are assigned a “type.” The type will be some form of element and will be both your Pokemon’s strength and its weakness.
The Strengths and Weaknesses associated with most types are self explanatory, while some cry out for explanation and questions remain unanswered. But the best news is that many Pokemon can learn moves outside of their base type, although a Pokemon with a certain element type will be more effective at performing an elemental move of their identical type.
*As a rule of thumb* try to keep two elemental moves matching your Pokemon’s type learned in their repetoire at all times.
The Mystery Dungeon games are a little different than regular Pokemon adventures in that the game is played third person as a Pokemon and in conjunction with a merry band of Pokemon friends.
One Pokemon is the leader and if the leader’s HP (Health Points) run down to zero (and you have no reviver seeds…), the dungeon is lost and is reset.
So always keep an eye on your leader’s health, try to avoid combat when possible, have healing items at the ready and watch how often you use a move.
Every move has a set amount of PP (Power Points) which tells you how many time in any particular dungeon your characters may use any one move. Exceeding your Pokemon’s max PP will render that character unable to perform that move again until it is healed.
A solution to that problem is the “No Attack” attack used by pushing the A button in combat. This allows the character to fight without using PP.
