Ah Pokemon Red and Blue, the games that started it all. Well, technically the Japanese Pokemon Red and Green did, but I'm sure most people who're reading this review have never played those. Anyway, since I picked Red I'll be reviewing this version, but the differences between Red and Blue are small, so feel free to consider this a Pokemon Blue review too. I'd like to note that my first Pokemon game was in fact Silver, so I'm pretty sure I don't have any nostalgia for this game.
Let's face it, Pokemon has never been known for it's graphics, but back then Pokemon Red's weren't that bad for a Gameboy game. The overworld is simple, but cute, and the Pokemon's sprites aren't too bad. They certainly look better than the the Japanese Red and Green ones. (For a comparison, compare Charmander's Red/Green sprite with Charmander's Red/Blue sprite.) There are some ugly exceptions though, like Mew, but it's not like anyone got to see that one. Overall I think Red and Blue's graphics weren't too bad, though they may look a bit dated nowadays.
I have always been a fan of the Pokemon series' music and Red and Blue aren't an exception. The Pokemon series' music certainly has evolved (no pun intended), and some of the tracks were worse than the others, but most of them were great. I mean, who doesn't remember the battle theme? In fact I really dislike Firered and Leafgreen's remade music compared to the original one, Lavender Town doesn't even sound creepy in the remakes!
Pokemon Red and Blue's gameplay certainly wasn't perfect. They sure were some glitchy games, though maybe that makes them even more fun for some and they weren't balanced properly (Alakazam for example was far too overpowered). However, they're still really fun to play, and they laid the basis for the rest of the series, so I can't criticize them too much for the flaws.
Gotta catch 'em all! Everyone remembers that phrase. And if that truly was your (impossible) goal, the game will sure last you a long time. However, like every other Pokemon game, it's really rush through it and once you beat the game there really isn't much left to do except for catching Mewtwo of course. Later Pokemon games fixed this issue, but Red sadly doesn't last that long once you've beaten the main game.
Overall I'd give Red a 7.5, but since I can't it's an 8. It really isn't my favorite Pokemon game, but I can imagine that it was great back when it was released. However I do think that's it's still worth replaying. (Though I personally prefer Yellow.)
And that was it, I hope you enjoyed my review. And now, onto Johto!
