Rust is a multiplayer-only survival game where the only aim is to survive in the wilderness. To do this you will need to overcome struggles such as hunger, thirst and cold by using gathered or stolen resources. Despite the presence of hostile animals such as bears and wolves, your primary threat is other players due to the game being solely multiplayer. Combat is accomplished through firearms and various weapons, such as bows. Rust is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Take a look at our tips to get help in the game.
Once you have crafted the Pickaxe and Hatchet you will have the tools you need to begin building your base. The only resource that you will require to do this is Wood so don't waste time with other resources, just focus on finding trees and gathering as much Wood as possible. Listed below are the items for your base that can be crafted only using wood:
- Building Plan
- Building Foundation
- Walls
- Wooden Door
- Wooden Lock
- Storage Box
- Campfire
After you have crafted a Sleeping Bag, so you can create a spawn point you will need to start gathering wood and stone, so you can craft tools. In Rust you will be able to collect these resources simply by hitting them with the rock which is your default starting tool. Your first tools once you have the required resources will be the Pickaxe and Hatchet.
Pickaxe
The Pickaxe is a tool used to gather ore and rocks and can also be used as a melee weapon. To craft it requires x100 Wood and x125 Metal Fragments
Hatchet
The Hatchet is a tool used for chopping trees and dismembering corpses. To craft it requires x100 Wood and x75 Metal Fragments.

It is crucial in Rust that you prioritize crafting a Sleeping Bag when you start the game as this item can be placed on the ground to create a custom respawn spot. Crafting a Sleeping Bag will save you the frustration of respawning at the default spawn location which is the beach and having to traverse the ground you have already covered to reach the place where you died.
In order to craft a Sleeping Bag you will need to acquire 30 Cloth which can be gathered from hemp plants in stacks of 10. This means you will need 3 plants. Make sure once you have crafted your Sleeping Bag you place it in a secure spot as it can still be destroyed by other players. It takes 25 hits to destroy the bed with a Hatchet.
The location you decided to build your base should have been influenced greatly by the resources that are available in it's immediate surroundings. Without doubt the best place to build your base is in a forest as it gives you easy access to lots of trees to farm for wood, any nearby hills will enable you to mine rock nodes for Stone, Metal, and Sulfur Ore which you can gather and use to craft weapons, armor, and equipment. Being near a body of water will give you a drinking source and there are animals in the forest you can hunt for meat.
Ideally you should be near a town as this will give you the opportunity to loot it for Scrap and Components which can be used in crafting and also as a currency for trading with other players. Towns though tend to be dangerous as they will b..
Once you reach the point in Rust where your base is full of resources, you may want to consider building a safe house to stash some of them to prevent you losing everything in one raid. A safe house is basically a small base hidden away somewhere that stores your Sleeping Bags, tools, weapons and other valuable items you have gathered and crafted during the game.
Eating is a crucial part of survival in Rust, and it is important that you do your cooking during the daytime before night falls. Lighting a fire or walking around with a torch at night will make your location easy to see for other players who will then target you for a raid. It is therefore safer to remain hidden in darkness during the night. Always check your food supplies before it gets dark and If you do have to cook a meal during the night do so away from your base, so it remains hidden from other players.
If you are starting out in Rust it is recommended that you join a small beginner-friendly server instead of the highly populated official server which will be full of experienced players looking to take advantage of a newcomer who is an easy target to raid. Joining a small beginner-friendly server will help you to gather resources and learn the ropes of the game without repeatedly getting killed right after spawning.
To join a server in Rust go to the main menu and select the 'Play' option. Then choose 'Community Servers' and look for the search bar at the bottom of the screen. If you now type 'friendly', 'beginner', or even 'PvE' you should be able to find an ideal starting server. Players can still kill you, but they will be less likely to in this type of server.
When logging out of Rust it is recommended that you get in the habit of taking all of your valuable items with you, that way they stay with you, and you do not have to worry about theft. If you are playing on a 'sleeper' sever you will not be able to do this. When you log out of a 'sleeper' server, your character 'sleeps' on the ground which makes you vulnerable to other players who can kill and loot your body.
Avoid the temptation to farm large amounts of resources in one go as this can be frustrating if you die, and lose what you have gathered. It is far safer to focus on getting what is necessary, gather small amounts of it, and return it to your base regularly. Doing this will ensure that in the event you are killed you have reduced the risk of losing it all.
Once you have built your base you are going to want to defend it against other players who will be set on raiding it. Without doubt the best weapon to use to do this is the Bolt-Action Rifle or 'bolty' as it is colloquially known as in Rust. This weapon can be made into an incredibly accurate sniper rifle by equipping it with the 8x scope which you can craft with High-Quality Metal. With the 8x Scope equipped you will be able to snipe enemies from over 100 meters away which means you will be able to take them down before they get near your base.
The Bolt-Action Rifle can be found in airdrops, bought from other players, and crafted using x30 High-Quality Metal, x1 Rifle Body, x5 Metal Pipe, and x2 Metal Spring. To craft the 8x Scope requires x50 High-Quality Metal.
Once you have gathered a sufficient amount of Wood you will want to find a location to build your base. It is important that you choose your spot carefully as it will have a big influence on how successful you are in the game. The location you are looking for will ideally be a well-hidden spot that has access to plenty of different resources in it's surrounding area, so you do not have to venture too far from your base to gather them.
The best place is a forest as this gives you immediate access to Wood which you need plenty of and the trees also provide cover. Being reasonably close to roads and old towns in particular is desirable as it allows you to search them for better materials later in the game. Avoid the snow and desert areas if you are a new player as their harsh cli..
Once you reach the mid-game of Rust you should consider crafting a Revolver. This weapon is perfect for that stage of the game as they are inexpensive, deadly accurate, and easy to use which makes them great for taking down an unsuspecting player in order to loot them for better gear. Revolvers take basic pistol ammo.
Blueprints are essential for crafting tools and weapons in Rust. Even if you have the resources, without the Blueprint you will be unable to craft the item you want. Blueprints can be obtained by placing a currently uncraftable item in a Research Table, along with the required amount of scrap.
Research tables can be found in Monuments as well as crafted for your base. To craft a Research Table requires x200 Metal Fragments and x75 Scrap. Prioritize blueprints as much as possible as they are the key to surviving longer in the game as they enable you to craft better weapons.
You will need a Work Bench to craft the actual item. Listed below are the three levels of Work Benches along with the requirements to craft them and what they can be used to make.
