Introduction to Oblivion: The elder scrolls IV -Introduction contents: I-Combat II-Magic (Including a spell guide) III-Stealth IV-Creatures (Including a creature guide) Combat Combat in Cyrodiil is a way of life. Weather it is against a creature or the occasional City Guard, at one point in time you will encounter some form of combat. Combat is mainly dependent on your playing style of Oblivion, weather you be an archer, mage, or warrior, you will learn how to equip yourself for the different combat styles. Here are a few tips to keep in mind before going out to the vast landscape of Cyrodiil: Carrying the proper weapon is a primary concern. Make sure that your weapon compliments your playing style. If you dont like long ranged combat, dont bring a bow, weapons that you are not going to use can just weigh you down when it comes time to looting a bandit or chest. Daggers allow you to carry a shield and are extremely fast weapons, but have a considerably short reach making stealth kills and power attacks a great challenge. Almost all one-handed weapons allow you to carry a shield; unlike daggers they have a more reasonable reach, speed, and damage. This is the best combination for the cautious player. Two-handed weapons have numerous benefits, and just as many penalties. On the benefits side, you have an extremely long reach, and you deal an amazing amount of damage. Power attacks from this type of are devastating. On the bad side, these weapons are quite slow and dont allow the use of a shield. The thinkers weapon is definitely the bow. All targets should be approached carefully and silently. Also, a marksman should always do their best to stay at long range and check their arrow supply. A good number to carry is 50-150 at all times. Make sure your weapon and armor are in good condition at all times. A weapon or piece of armor that is not kept in good condition at all times can be fatal. A good supply of Repair Hammers can be the item that keeps you alive. Good combat strategies are a must in the mystical world of Oblivion. They are necessary for defeating your foes fast and keeping yourself alive. These strategies vary drastically from the different styles of play. Combat strategies can be broken into to groups: Melee and Marksman. -Melee This is the character who likes to chop everything in sight. Melee characters are never afraid of up-close and personal combat. Every fight is a major struggle to do more damage to the target than sustained. Either a one-handed sword and shield or a massive two-handed claymore, this job is done with brute force. Here are some good tips: When fighting enemies with weak attacks, try to stand as close to them as possible to maximize your reach. Try to keep them in your sights and watch your fatigue level. Always use potions and dont ever be afraid to block, a good combination of these and some good ol fashioned slugging with your sword can be devastating. When fighting opponents with strong attacks, the name of the game is speed and maneuverability. Dodge their slow attacks, and then come back with some quick strikes. Dont try to block too much, because your shield can let a lot of damage through putting you in jeopardy. Take this enemy down as quickly as possible or soon you might start to succumb to the damage. Dont ever underestimate a spell caster. Even though they carry light weapons, (Usually a dagger or shortsword) these are the most maneuverable of all enemies in the game. Always keep them in your sight and keep the quick strikes to a maximum. Using power attacks will give them time to outmaneuver you and cast a nasty spell. The best way to take out a mage combatant is to corner them, this way they have nowhere to run and you can strike them with many quick blows at once without them moving. -Marksman The name of the game is range for this style of fighting. A marksman never likes to get into a melee. Usually light armored and quick; the marksman can be just as deadly as a melee character if played smartly. These are the best tips for a marksman: When fighting opponents with weak attacks, open up with a stealth attack. This could be the only shot you need. If the terrain allows, run after them after you have fired about two shots. This means that they will have very little health and you can finish them off quickly. Remember that arrows can be scarce in Cyrodiil and you can only carry a limited number. Dont waste arrows on enemies, and try to use poison often. These can be a deadly combination. When fighting strong attacked opponents, always open with a poisoned stealth shot. The attack bonus and poison working in unison with give you just the start you need. Try to have open room to back off and keep shooting. Never be afraid to retreat or use a chameleon spell. Try to heal up and finish as quickly as possible. Spell casters are a whole different type of monster for this style. Opening with a good stealth shot can be the difference between life and death. Try to keep distance between you and the caster, a few well placed shots from a decent sharpshooter will finish off these foes quickly. Magic Magic is the main component in the province of Cyrodiil. Magicka flows through everything and everyone. Most warriors have some form of magic embedded in their weapon or equipment. Magic will keep you safe from harm and help you greatly throughout your adventures in the province of Cyrodiil. Like any told, magic can be difficult to control. The one place that you can control magic is at the Mages Guild in any of the major cities. The guild has an ancient knowledge of magic and no library could even begin to measure up to the amount of knowledge that Mages Guild has conjured. The guilds in the different cities of Cyrodiil all teach different specializations of magic. Here is the specialization each city teaches: Cheydinhal- Alteration Bruma- A sampling of all schools Bravil- Illusion Anvil- Restoration Chorrol- Conjuration Skingrad- Destruction Leyawiin- Mysticism Although the Mages Guild can provide anyone with the knowledge to cast spells, the only way to gain magical power is to practice. The surest method to advance you magical ability and gain access to high-level magic is to tap into your own Magicka stores as often as possible. Magic can also be learned and practiced in combat. The versatility is the mages greatest asset. Anyone can cast a few fireballs at a goblin, but it takes a master to take down an army of goblins with one fireball. Magic should be used as often as possible in Cyrodiil. Many things come into play here, first is how skilled your opponent is. Your success is also based on weather youre moving or standing still. Its surprising how often guards walk right by you when youre standing still. The slower the better while sneaking, and what youre wearing, steel boots are not the best for sneaking around. However, barefoot is one of the best things you can not wear. When youre sneaking your curser turns into the shape of an eye. When the eye is solid gold, someone or something can see you. When the eye is shaded, youre undetected. There are many times when sneaking is essential in Cyrodiil. Also, if you strike somebody undetected, you will get a bonus on the amount of damage you place, this is called a sneak attack and is extremely helpful. This bonus can be raised by raising your sneak level. Your sneak level can be raised by crouching around others and walking. This increases your sneak level by the second, and it is very quick way to level up to a journeyman of sneak. Lockpicking also comes into play when you are sneaking. Lock picks are relatively inexpensive, and are extremely handy. If you have a lockpick and activate a locked door, the lockpick interface comes up. You can click the auto attempt button if you are in a hurry, but you will break more lockpicks. Move the pick under a tumbler and push the tumbler. The trick is to get the tumbler to stick at the right moment. This can be done easily by waiting for the tumbler to move up slowly. The more skilled your character is in security, the slower the tumblers will move and the fewer tumblers will fall back down when you break a pick. As your character gets higher and higher, the locks also get higher, so dont neglect your security skill as it could be the key to completing a hard mission, or just finding some high level loot in a chest. Creatures Creatures roam the province of Cyrodiil terrorizing citizens and attacking guards.
